BIO-221 Introduction to Marine Biology
This course focuses on the biology and ecology of marine ecosystems and oceanography. The biological, chemical, physical, and geographical factors of marine ecosystems are explored, including the inter-tidal zones, sandy and rocky shores, the ocean floor, seagrass, mangroves, coral reefs, open ocean, and the abyss. A survey of the biodiversity of marine organisms includes algae, plankton, invertabrates, reptiles, birds, fishes, and mammals. Behavioral characteristics of unique species are discussed. The impact of humans on the marine environment, conservation, and management are highlighted. Research, laboratory, and field techniques are emphasized. Field work and field trips are included.
